WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS.


Oh God.


Teenagers. Who look like unshaven 40 year olds. With bald, stone craniums.


No. No more. Make it stop.


It's not going to stop, is it? It's never going to stop. When I look away, when I close my eyes, there they are, grinning, incongruous earring dangling, cheap two-color process cover mocking me. ROCK HEADS.


People paid money for this. People TOOK money for this. Trees DIED for this.


Why is this still happening? Why, God?


I DON'T WANT TO LOOK ANY MORE. DON'T MAKE ME LOOK.


I hope one day to be present at some kind of horrible accident, perhaps an explosion at a sewage treatment plant or the overflow of a liquid manure retention pond, there to witness the complete devastation of the entire countryside by a flood of reeking, filthy, flyblown, disease-ridden waste. Because at that point somebody will ask me, "Isn't it terrible?"
And I'll say "No."

Because I've seen "Rock Heads."


Is there some kind of backstory to this comic? Was this all a private joke between the artist and writer, to see if they could actually force this terror onto America's newsstands? Did they lose a bet? And the retailers. Did they open that box from Capital City or Friendly Frank's containing twenty or twenty-five pristine mint copies of "Rock Heads", and did they remark, "Oh look Fred, it's the end of civilization?" Or did they shrug and place it on the rack with all the other hacked-out, desperate losers of the black and white boom, thereby implicating themselves as co-conspirators in this great crime against taste and intelligence? I'm guessing the latter.


What could spark something like this? Abuse? Neglect? Heretofore undetected environmental pollution destroying nerves and brain cells across a wide swath of the American comic book creating, selling, and reading public? Can we hold the creators responsible? Did they not arise from our own society? Is not the very culture that spawned their creativity to blame? Where have we, Western Civilization, failed? When we gaze into the abyss, who do we see gazing back but... the Rock Heads?
